Aggregates make up the largest share by volume of concrete and asphalt, so their strength, shape and grading directly determine how the finished material performs. Any lab equipping itself to serve Africa's construction sector needs a reliable set of aggregate testing equipment to verify these properties before aggregates are approved for a project.

Why the Los Angeles Abrasion Machine Matters Most

The Los Angeles abrasion test is usually the single most-requested aggregate test on road and highway projects across Africa, because it predicts how well an aggregate will resist the wear of traffic once placed in asphalt or a granular base course. A lab without a properly calibrated Los Angeles machine cannot bid on most government road contracts, making it typically the first investment priority for a new aggregate testing lab.

Sieve Shakers: Manual vs Electromagnetic

Electromagnetic sieve shakers give a more consistent, repeatable sieving action than manual shaking and are strongly preferred for accredited labs. Woven wire mesh sieves and wet washing sieves should be sized to match the aggregate gradations specified in your local road authority's specification – typically 75 mm down to 75 microns for a full grading curve.

Building a Complete Materials Lab

Aggregate testing rarely stands alone: most labs pair it with asphalt testing equipment and concrete compression machines, since aggregates feed directly into both mixes. See our guide to choosing a laboratory equipment supplier in Africa for how to plan a full lab across every material category.
