Gyratory Compactor: the Centrepiece of a Mix Design Lab

Since the shift toward Superpave and performance-graded mix design (see our earlier post on the Superpave Mix Design Method), the gyratory compactor has become the standard tool for preparing test specimens that represent how asphalt actually densifies under traffic. Labs bidding on national highway authority contracts across Africa are increasingly required to demonstrate gyratory compaction capability rather than older Marshall hammer methods alone.

Field Density: Nuclear vs Non-Nuclear Gauges

Troxler nuclear surface density gauges remain the fastest way to verify in-place compaction on a road project, though they require radiation licensing and transport permits that vary by country in Africa – a factor to plan for early. Where licensing is a barrier, core sampling combined with laboratory density testing is the common alternative.
