It is a common point of confusion for new lab managers: a cement compression machine is a smaller-capacity, precision instrument (typically under 300 kN) designed to break 40 or 50 mm mortar cube or prism specimens under EN 196-1 or ASTM C109, while a concrete compression machine is a much higher-capacity frame (1300–5000 kN) built for full-size 150 or 200 mm concrete cubes and cylinders. A cement lab testing raw cement quality needs the former; a site or structural lab testing finished concrete needs the latter – many labs in Africa need both.
Cement that sets too quickly or too slowly can compromise an entire concrete pour, especially in Africa's hotter climates where ambient temperature already accelerates setting. A properly calibrated Vicat apparatus is the fastest way to catch an out-of-specification cement batch before it reaches site, avoiding costly rework.
